Farmington EC Weekend - Updated

17.Jan.2012

Titcomb Mountain Eastern Cup
Only 5 days after the concluding races at US Nationals in Rumford, ME, the Green Racing Project was back in action again this weekend. With Ida and Susan back in Europe, Hannah racing at biathlon NorAms in Jericho, VT, the rest of the GRP headed back to western Maine for the second weekend of the TD Bank Eastern Cup at Titcomb Mountain in Farmington.

With scant snow at Saturday's orginal venue in Augusta, both the sprint and distance events slated for the weekend went off on a short man-made loop at the base of the alpine area at Titcomb. Saturday featured a short, roller-derby-esque sprint course that had most of the men and many women opting for skate skis to double both the classic sprint qualifier and all the rounds. Maria Stuber outsprinted Clare Egan in the lanes to take the final spot on the podium behind Corey Stock (CSU) and Rosie Brennan (APU). On the men's side, Tim Reynolds led in qualifying, but fell short in the final for 2nd place behind Dakota Blackhorse von Jess of Bend, OR. Patrick O'Brien wrapped up the final spot on the podium for Craftsbury. Also of note was CNSC's Hannah Miller making the A-Final and finishing 5th overall, while Lauren Gillot took bronze for J2 women.

Sunday featured a tougher loop; with the lifts closed for the day, the course traversed the alpine area and climbed a long pitch up the teaching hill before turning 180 degrees and zooming back down to the stadium. The women skied six laps while the men skied 8. Despite some tough competition from SVSEF and the Pacific Northwest contingent, the GRP took 5 of 6 podium spots on the day. Maria and Patrick took victories, with Bryan Cook and Nils Koons rounding out the podium sweep for the men. Clare Egan was third. Results here.

NorAm Biathlon Invitational

Closer to home, Hannah turned in some solid performances at the biathlon NorAm cup in Jericho. She won both the mass start race and the sprint by over thirty seconds, despite shooting 45% and 40% each day! Her results were strong enough to gain a nomination to the U26 World Championships squad in Slovakia in February. More on that to follow.

Hannah's weekend was pretty representative of all the other Craftsbury biathletes as well. Youth Tara Geraghty-Moats ended the weekend with a silver (sprint) and two golds (pursuit and mass start). Both of TGM's wins were by wide margins:  41 seconds and 3 minutes.

Hannah's brother Ethan Dreissigacker missed the sprint race due to school commitments, but made up for it in the next two races. Saturday's race in particular featured only 2 misses on the range for Eth, laying the groundwork for a solid win of 2 minutes.

Craftsbury biathlete and groomer Keith Woodward kept the momentum going in the masters' class, winning the masters' class out right on Friday and Saturday, and finishing as 3rd master (1st 50+) on Sunday.

All results can be found on the Ethan Allen Biathlon website.

International Results

Farther away, Ida began her second tour of the season in Europe. She raced a skate sprint in downtown Milan, Italy. She qualified 43rd, only 4 seconds from making the quarterfinals. Results here.

Susan led the US women in biathlon again this weekend in Nove Mesto, CZE. She finished 49th in the 15k individual with 4 misses. In the 7.5k sprint she improved to 45th, albeit with 2 more misses in 2 fewer stages. Results here.
