Coach Brett Ely at Pan Am Games

18.Oct.2011

Craftsbury coach Brett Ely was named to the 90-person Team USA roster for the Pan American Games slated to be held October 24 - 29 in Guadalajara, Mexico. Brett will be wearing the red, white and blue in the women’s marathon on October 23rd.

Brett shared her thoughts about the upcoming race: “It has been a dream of mine to represent the United States in international competition, so I was thrilled to be selected for the Pan Am Games marathon team. It's an incredible opportunity, but it does present a few unique challenges. The race takes place just 12 weeks before the Olympic Trials marathon, so I am working with my coach, Terry Shea, to devise a plan that allows me to be ready for both the Pan Am Games in October and the 2012 U.S. Olympic team trials marathon in January. I have been injury free for over a year now, so I'm trying to build on that consistency and keep moving forward with each race. I feel very fortunate for both competitive opportunities and I'm looking forward to representing the Unites States and the Boston Athletic Association as best I can.

"The race is also likely to be warm and will take place over 5000ft. above sea level. Both of these details add an additional element of difficulty, but I’m preparing for this in training, and I know everyone in the race will be dealing with those same conditions. I’ve had some success in warm-weather marathons (2010 ING Miami Marathon) and I’m learning everything I can about preparing to race at high altitude.”

Best wishes to Brett as she races for Team USA! You can follow the PanAm Marathon at the official website here.
