Highland Lodge X-C Ski Trails Remain Open

22.Nov.2011

Thanks to collaborative efforts between an enthusiastic group of Greensboro residents and the Craftsbury Outdoor Center, the x-c ski and snowshoe trails of the Highland Lodge will remain open to skiers and snowshoers despite the closing of the Lodge.

On October 10, the long-time owners of the Lodge made the tough decision to close their doors and sell the Lodge. Over the past 50+ years, David Smith’s family had built and maintained a wonderful trail system offering over 50k of skiing through woods and fields above Greensboro. The trails cross the properties of numerous landowners, all of whom have granted permission for trail use over the years. When news spread of the lodge’s closing, local skiers - including David - came together immediately to see what they could do to keep this community trail system open.

Meanwhile, about 20k away and connected to Highland Lodge by ski trails sits the Craftsbury Outdoor Center. A favorite touring route for Craftsbury skiers is the trip over to Highland Lodge (or the trip from Highland Lodge back to Craftsbury if you prefer more downhill!) and the annual Craftsbury Marathon usually starts at the Lodge and ends on Craftsbury Common. So we are likewise interested in helping to keep the Highland Lodge trail system alive.

We're excited to announce a partnership with the Greensboro skiers that will keep the majority of the trail system groomed and skiable this winter. Craftsbury will extend its grooming routes to encompass a portion of the Highland Lodge trails. There will be an advisory group of interested Greensboro skiers that will serve as a communication link to the local community, coordinating volunteers and connecting with landowners as needed. The two groups will collaborate to staff the Touring Center at the Lodge on weekends and vacation weeks. Craftsbury also hopes to provide shuttle service on weekends to facilitate one-way expeditions (keep watching our website for more details on this).

Craftsbury memberships now cover skiing at both locations and offer other benefits as well. The Greensboro trails will be open to the community, with skiers encouraged to join the Outdoor Center to support the grooming and maintenance of the trails. Membership is $100 for a family, $50 for an individual, and $25 for students and seniors. You can find more info at www.craftsbury.com/greensborotrails - a webpage we hope to develop into hub of information for Greensboro ski information.

We're thrilled to partner with members of the Greensboro ski community and continue maintaining the trails at Highland Lodge. Be sure to enjoy all 135k of interconnected trails this winter!
